Jug Hole, Harrison County, Indiana

I have been to Jug Hole a number of times and have a lot of pictures of it. Eventually I might get around to dumping them all out here. For now, here’s several of a trip I think long about 1990 (though I could certainly be wrong) that I took with Kent and Terry Wilson, seen here getting ready for the descent. I met them just before they were married and while I haven’t seen either in years, I still count them as a couple of my dearest friends.

Jug is a remarkable pit for a lot of good reasons, not the least of which is that it’s purely spectacular and it affords a wonderful sixty foot free drop. Here’s Terry on her way down, about to go “free”.

I don’t generally recommend using someone else’s gear to drop a pit, but when the opportunity arises, you grab it. In a borrowed helmet and with the lightest of gear, I’m rigged in and ready here. About the only things I’m using that are mine are the pack and the clothes! This is a friendly drop, with a nice tree to hug as you get ready to step out.

Heading down. While no pit is ever completely safe, Jug is about as easy an in-out as there is. Around the tree, a few steps down, let the rope and harness take your weight, and off you go…

The last step, with the picture (as the one above) shot from the “diving board” on the opposite side from the rig point. Yes, that is the floor of the pit, illuminated by the sun. More on this anon.

     Free at last!

As previously noted, the floor of the pit is well-lit, making this one of those very few caves you can visit sans headlamp. The best time to visit is right around noon, when the sun produces an amazing shaft of light that has to be experienced in person to be fully appreciated. Still, this picture by “Kento” does it some justice: that’s Terry and I “in the spotlight” in this shot from rather a unique perspective…between the legs!

And again, only this time without the legs, and with a clear view of Kent’s shadow!

Now, from below, a short time thereafter. Again, this is something that a photograph can hardly capture. This pit alone is worth all the time, trouble, expense, and hazard of “vertical” caving. Google “Jug Hole” someday and I’m sure you’ll find lots of better pictures. Still the best way is to see it in person!
